SOUTHWEST passengers will now need to follow even more security measures before boarding.

The airline announced that customers will need to follow new guidelines before being cleared to fly.

Starting September 25, Southwest will begin requiring passengers to remove lithium batteries from powered wheelchairs and scooters before boarding, according to Reuters .

The airline cited fire risks as the main reason the batteries will need to be removed.

Starting in January, the airline will implement size restrictions on lithium batteries.

"Lithium batteries have become one of the most common sources of smoke and fire incidents on aircraft,” Southwest said in a note to employees, according to Reuters.
