Olympic snowboarder Shaun White and actress Nina Dobrev have called off their engagement. Sources are describing the high-profile split as a mutual decision.

An insider close to the couple told PEOPLE , “It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.”

Observant fans had noticed the couple’s absence from each other’s social media accounts in recent months. According to PEOPLE , Dobrev attended the Toronto International Film Festival alone on Sept. 7, which intensified speculation about their relationship status.

White, 39, is a three-time Olympic champion snowboarder. Dobrev, 36, an actress, is known for her starring role in “The Vampire Diaries,” the Associated Press said.
