1. For MSU, not a good day and maybe a disaster

EAST LANSING — In the days leading up to Michigan State’s game Saturday against Youngstown State, I was repeatedly asked what I would consider success for MSU in this game against a lower-division opponent.

Well, not that.

At least two things MSU really didn’t want to see occurred in Saturday’s 41-24 win over the Penguins : The Spartans ’ defense looked susceptible to long drives and big plays — still with little pressure on the quarterback — and MSU saw one player it definitely cannot afford to lose, Nick Marsh, suffer an apparent injury.

Marsh left the game in the first half after a dazzling start — six catches for 94 yards — playing at a different speed than his defenders. He was seen with a some sort of wrap around his right calf
