KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Five people were taken to the hospital after a wreck on U.S. Highway 59 just south of Lawrence, Kansas, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says.

According to DGSO, the crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. at North 1100 Road when a westbound driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Another vehicle headed southbound struck the westbound vehicle in the intersection.

The sheriff's office says that three people in the westbound vehicle suffered injuries, two of them are in serious condition. Two of the people in the southbound vehicle suffered serious injuries as well.

The sheriff's office shut down the southbound lanes of Hwy 59 for an extended period of time to investigate the crash. Lanes reopened around 7 p.m.
