Saturday moved the Washington area closer to autumn, but the movement seemed without hurry or haste, leaving the warm, dry afternoon to show a lot of summer and its shining splendors.

Autumn provides a transition between summer and winter, while September is the link between summer and autumn. In embodying those seasons, Saturday seemed to symbolize the meteorological function of its month.
