As strike action for thousands of BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) workers nears the two-week mark, the union’s president says he wants remote work language added into a new contract, but a Chamber CEO says that could further damage downtown businesses.
On Friday, the BCGEU’s strike grew to 6,000 members now on the picket lines across the province after placing an overtime ban for workers at five liquor distribution branches.
Along with a wage increase, the union says it’s looking to ratify language into a new agreement.
“What we are seeking is, first of all, to designate what are truly full-time remote positions which allow people to live and work in different areas of the province than where their headquarters may be,” said Paul Finch, president of the BCGEU.
