Behind the walls of this innocuous-looking unit complex in Raceview, a baby boy would be found dead.

On June 21, 2019, Queensland police responded to a distressed triple-0 call from a woman, who told them her child was “completely gone”. It was Natalie Jade Whitehead, the mother of Dexter Wilton, then aged just 8½ months.

When paramedics and police arrived 12 minutes later, they were taken aback by the filthy state of the Ipswich unit.

Animal faeces were everywhere. The kitchen was scattered with dirty dishes, food and animal food scraps. The room where Dexter slept contained two cots – one of which was used for storage, while dirty nappies and baby clothes were strewn throughout.
