The turnout was great for the annual Heart Walk and 5K Run at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and so was the fundraising tally.
However, the issues facing New Mexicans when it comes to heart health haven't changed much.
"Here in New Mexico, you know, we're such a rural state, and the lack of access to health care in our state is a challenge," said Sherri Wells, executive director of the American Heart Association of New Mexico. "So here we are. That's why we're in a lot of different communities bringing resources to people. Again, we just don't have enough providers in this state and enough resources for people."
Wells said New Mexico deals with other issues that are particularly difficult to overcome when it comes to heart health — and health in general.
