Dashawn Spears arrived at LSU as an important recruit.

LSU was in the midst of rebuilding its secondary following the 2023 season, a year in which its defense likely cost the Tigers a spot in the College Football Playoff.

They had surrendered at least 30 points in eight games and allowed over 271 passing yards per contest in Southeastern Conference play. The Tigers changed out their coaching staff at the end of the year, but no unit on the team needed to replenish its ranks more than the secondary.

And Spears — the No. 7 safety in the nation and a top-3 recruit in Louisiana in the 2024 class, according to the 247Sports Composite — was a big piece in LSU's quest toward adding more talent to the room.
