A woman who was domestically abused by a Britt police officer is suing the city as well as the officer.

Benjamin S. Mehmen, 30, Clear Lake, was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison in February after being convicted of domestic abuse by strangulation and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. That dangerous weapon was his police-issued Taser.

Britt resident Shelby L. Johnson's lawsuit states that although the city keeps an automatic log of when police officers activate their Tasers, including when they are off duty, officials "failed to note or investigate a discharge of Mehmen's Taser dozens of times, on multiple occasions" until she reported the abuse to law enforcement in March 2024.
