If you watched New Mexico State against Louisiana Tech, would you believe that it had Conference USA's best defense statistically going into the game?

Believe it or not, it was true. The Aggies had allowed the fewest yards and points among CUSA teams before their conference opener against the Bulldogs on Sept. 13, with their 8.5 points allowed per game mark ranking 13th nationally during the week. However, what we got was a far cry from NM State's past two games.

The Aggies (2-1, 0-1 Conference USA) allowed 574 yards and five offensive touchdowns in a 49-14 road defeat to LA Tech (2-1, 1-0 CUSA). NM State will wonder what hit its defense, especially considering the Bulldogs' yards per game average ranked in the bottom three among CUSA teams before Saturday.
