Michigan has seen a concerning rise in bicyclist-involved crashes with 2024 producing an eight-year high.
Last year, the state reported 1,773 vehicle crashes involving bicycles. It marked a 20% increase from 2023, and a 42% jump since 2021, according to annual data published this summer by Michigan State Police.
Bicycle crashes caused 29 deaths last year, which was on par with the five-year average but five more than in 2023.
Thirty-eight counties reported year-over-year increases in vehicles hitting bicyclists. Of the counties with the most such crashes, Ingham, Kalamazoo and Ottawa had the largest increases — each more than 40%.
