Ricky Hatton, a former world boxing champion known for his popularity in the sport, has died at the age of 46. He was found deceased at his home in Greater Manchester, according to reports. Authorities stated that they are not treating the death as suspicious.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers responded to a call from a member of the public at 6:45 a.m. on Sunday. They discovered the body of a 46-year-old man at Bowlacre Road in Hyde, Tameside. The police did not disclose the identity of the deceased but mentioned they are collaborating with his family to release a statement to the media.
Friends and fellow boxers quickly paid tribute to Hatton following the news of his passing. Amir Khan, a former world champion, expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, "Today we lost not only one of Britain’s greatest boxers, but a friend, a mentor, a warrior, Ricky Hatton."
Tyson Fury, another heavyweight champion, shared his condolences on Instagram, saying, "Rip to the legend Ricky Hatton may he rip. There will only ever be 1 Ricky Hatton. can’t believe this so young."
Hatton's death comes just two months after he announced plans to return to boxing in December for a professional bout against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai. Throughout his career, Hatton won world titles in both light-welterweight and welterweight divisions. He faced some of the best fighters of his era, including Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
Known for his approachable personality, Hatton was also candid about his struggles with mental health after retiring from boxing. Khan emphasized the importance of discussing mental health, stating, "As fighters, we tell ourselves we’re strong — we train, we sweat, we take hits, we get up. But sometimes the hardest fight happens in silence, in the mind. Mental health isn’t weakness. It’s part of being human. And we must talk about it. We must reach out. We must lean on each other."
After his boxing career, Hatton transitioned into coaching, leading Zhanat Zhakiyanov to a world bantamweight title victory in 2017.
