Beginning Sept. 30, the Social Security Administration will phase out paper checks for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments, in accordance with a federal modernization directive signed by President Donald Trump.
Currently, fewer than 1% of beneficiaries still receive payments by mail. The administration is urging those individuals to switch to either direct deposit or the Direct Express prepaid debit card in order to avoid disruptions, the outlet said.
Federal agencies have begun notifying affected recipients, providing instructions for enrolling in electronic payment options. For most, according to the outlet, the transition simply involves updating payment details online, by phone, or in person at a local SSA office.
