NEW YORK -- No Mets team has ever lost nine consecutive games then gone on to make the playoffs. Rather than attempt to challenge that inauspicious history, the Mets snapped their eight-game losing streak Sunday behind Pete Alonso ’s three-run, walk-off homer, which defeated the Rangers, 5-2 , at Citi Field in 10 innings.

As has become their custom, the Mets built a two-run lead only to lose it in the later innings, this time on a Joc Pederson two-run single off Reed Garrett in the seventh. But they kept the Rangers scoreless from there thanks in part to Edwin Díaz and Ryne Stanek, who both stranded runners on third base with less than two outs in the ninth and 10th innings.
