HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1948, Fred Sonic Smith was born in Lincoln County, West Virginia.

He became a guitarist for the band MC5 after he moved to Detroit.

The group turned out music that became known as punk rock.

He gained more fame when he married Patti Smith - a well known poet and musician.

Sonic died in 1994 at 46 years old.
