TORONTO — Beverly Thomson, a prominent Canadian journalist and longtime anchor for CTV News, has passed away at the age of 61. She died on Sunday morning, surrounded by her family, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Thomson was well-known for her engaging interviews with a range of public figures, including politicians and celebrities. Her career at CTV News spanned over three decades, during which she covered significant events such as the 2016 U.S. presidential election. She also conducted interviews with notable personalities like Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Donald Trump, and Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
In recognition of her contributions to journalism, Thomson received a lifetime achievement award from the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada last October. Lis Travers, the then-president of RTDNA Canada, praised her as “one of Canada’s most respected news personalities.”
Richard Gray, the vice-president of News at Bell Media, expressed his condolences in a statement on Sunday. He described Thomson as a “trusted voice and a valued teammate” at CTV News. Gray noted, “Bev’s natural on-air style created an immediate connection with viewers. For decades, she also made a significant impact across the country with her vocal support and advocacy for cancer charities.”
Gray concluded by stating, “Bev will be dearly missed by all of us at CTV News. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”
