LOS ANGELES — Seth Rogen won the award for best actor in a comedy series for his role in "The Studio" at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday. The event marked a significant night for Apple TV+, with Rogen's win alongside Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman, who took home awards for their performances in "Severance." Rogen expressed his disbelief, stating, "I could not wrap my head around this happening. I’ve never won anything in my life."

Britt Lower won best actress in a drama for her role in "Severance," while Tramell Tillman received the award for best supporting actor in a drama. Tillman, dressed in an all-white tuxedo, acknowledged his mother in the audience, saying, "You were there for me where no one else was, and no one else would show up." Lower's win was unexpected, as Kathy Bates was considered a strong contender for her role in "Matlock."

Jean Smart won best actress in a comedy for her performance in "Hacks," marking her fourth win in this category. At 73, she extended her record as the oldest woman to win this award. Her co-star, Hannah Einbinder, who had been nominated for all four seasons of "Hacks," won best supporting actress in a comedy. Einbinder humorously remarked about her previous losses, saying, "But this is cool too!" before making a political statement during her speech.

Stephen Colbert opened the show by presenting an award, receiving a warm standing ovation despite the recent cancellation of his show. He quipped, "While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?" The host for the evening, Nate Bargatze, delivered his opening monologue after the first award was presented, a departure from the usual format.

Katherine LaNasa won best supporting actress in a drama for her role in "The Pitt," surprising many who expected a nominee from "The White Lotus" to take the award. LaNasa expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am so proud and honored."

The ceremony featured a comedic sketch with "Saturday Night Live" stars, where Bargatze portrayed television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth discussing the future of television.

Apple TV+ is having a standout Emmy year, with "Severance" and "The Studio" leading in nominations. "The Studio" tied a record with 23 nominations and had already won nine Emmys at the Creative Arts ceremony. It is expected to break the record for the most Emmy wins in a season by a comedy. "Severance," which explores themes of identity and work-life balance, received 27 nominations and won six at the Creative Arts ceremony.

In the drama category, "Severance" is competing for best drama against "The Pitt," which features Noah Wyle, a sentimental favorite for his role. Wyle has been nominated five times without a win for his earlier role on "ER."

The Emmy Awards aired live on CBS, with streaming available for subscribers of Paramount+ with Showtime.
