Jean Smart won the award for best comedy actress during the 2025 Emmys on Sunday night.

Smart was nominated alongside Uzo Aduba ( The Residence ), Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This ), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary ) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear ).

When taking the stage, Smart was quick to tell the audience that she was still in recovery from an injury: “If I was walking like John Wayne, it’s ’cause I broke my knee this summer and it’s not quite repaired.”

“One of the best things about winning something like this is you get to publicly thank the people you work with,” she continued, then thanking her “unbelievable” crew, “incredible” castmates and “beyond brilliant” showrunners. She also thanked her children who are her “anchor” and her “cheerleader” Joe [Pacheco].
