The University of Texas at El Paso has hired Col. Brendan Gallagher as vice president for business affairs.

Gallagher, who recently retired from the Army as garrison commander of Fort Bliss, will oversee UTEP’s business, finance and facilities operations.

“Col. Gallagher led and managed one of the largest installations in the U.S. Army right here in El Paso,” UTEP President Heather Wilson said in a news release. “We are fortunate that he has chosen to stay in Texas and help lead and build this great university.”

A decorated Army Ranger, Gallagher managed a $393 million annual budget as garrison commander, a position similar to that of a city manager. He served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Korea, as well as at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
