Police were investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash on Sept. 14 involving a motorcyclist, a car and a Waymo self-driving vehicle near the Arizona State University Tempe campus.

The accident occurred near Lemon Street and Rural Road, Tempe police said.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police confirmed. As of 6 p.m. Sept. 14, the victim had not been publicly identified.

According to a Waymo spokesperson, the incident happened about 1:20 p.m. Sept. 14. The self-driving vehicle was yielding to a pedestrian while preparing to make a right turn when it was rear-ended by the motorcyclist.

A passenger vehicle traveling in the adjacent lane struck the motorcyclist and fled, according to a Waymo spokesperson.
