HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Residents and lawmakers in West Maui are trying to find solutions after the county upgraded the water shortage in the area.

Considering West Maui’s limited water supply, area resident Kekai Keahi has been proactively managing his own water usage.

“This is my yard right now, if you can see that,” Keahi said, pointing to his parched, yellow front lawn. “I stopped watering my yard for a while now. Being that I was in the water fight for so long I understand how dire our water situation is.”

On Friday, the Maui County Department of Water Supply upped the shortage to a Stage 2 because the anticipated demand for water in the area is expected to exceed supply by 16 to 30 percent.
