West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) boasts one of the few living buffalos as a mascot in the United States. Only Colorado State University has another buffalo, and it’s unknown if he still makes appearances at games.
Thunder XVI, or “Sally” as she’s known, was born on a ranch in Holdenville, Oklahoma, owned by Dr. Charles Addington. Sadly, her mother died after she was born, so Addington reached out to Dr. Kelly Jones, clinical assistant professor of agriculture at WTAMU. Jones happily accepted the calf to be nursed and trained to be the next Buffalo Mascot when Thunder XV retires.
Sally is still nursing and learning the ropes as she’s trained by 12 Herdsmen (men and women), agriculture students who take part in the feeding, caring and training of her and of Thunder XV. Jones said at first
