Many Democratic spirits were lifted last month when former senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, an economic populist with strong ties to Ohio’s industrial working class, launched his campaign to take on Republican Sen. Jon Husted. Brown raised an impressive $3.6 million in the 24 hours following the announcement. He’s going to need a lot more in a contest that is expected to be one of the most expensive in the 2026 midterms, a race that Brown is by no means certain to win.
