On Friday, the Town of Waxhaw said it had become the victim of a cybercriminal attack, according to a post on Instagram.

Town officials said “irregularities in our systems” were noticed early in the morning, and immediate actions were taken.

“IT staff immediately retained the services of the North Carolina Joint Cybersecurity Task Force, a team of outside experts from the NC National Guard, the NCLGISA Cybersecurity Strike Team, NC Emergency Management, and the NC Department of IT, to launch a forensic investigation and help secure our servers,” according to a release.

They’re now working with town officials and national cybersecurity experts to figure out the impacts.
