Hollywood had a simple goal this year: Get summer box-office earnings back to pre-COVID levels of $4 billion, which has only happened once since the pandemic. But a slate jampacked with tentpole remakes, reboots and sequels — and a few surprising nonblockbuster hits — didn’t do the trick, bringing in about $3.75 billion between May and Labor Day, a slight uptick from last year’s $3.68 billion.

Enter the fall season, long home to the buzziest premieres of the year. No matter the box-office numbers, I’ll be watching these 11 films on the silver screen — where the magic happens, as Nicole Kidman likes to remind us.
