The chief executive of Primark's parent company has cautioned the Government that planned business rates reforms are "mistaken" and pile additional strain on major retailers across UK high streets. George Weston, the billionaire head of Associated British Foods (ABF), informed the PA news agency that the Labour Government "should not increase taxes on businesses any more" ahead of November's Budget.
This comes as Chancellor Rachel Reeves grapples with boosting Treasury revenues whilst tackling a potential £40 billion shortfall in public finances. Earlier Government commitments not to raise taxes on working people have consequently sparked fears that the Chancellor might target businesses once more with additional tax rises.
