A woman who killed a dog with a Samurai sword then lied claiming it had attacked her has been jailed. The Staffie cross was left with the weapon embedded in its body after the "abhorrent" cruelty.

Alicia Darcy, 54, carried out the attack as the animal slept. At Chester Crown Court she pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal as well as possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.

She was sentenced to 18 months in prison and was given a disqualification order banning her from having anything to do with animals. The Samurai sword was seized for destruction
