Electric bicycle riders are eight times more likely to crash in urban areas than those using electric scooters, new research has revealed. E-scooters have frequently been branded as more hazardous than electric bikes, but safety specialists say this perception shifts when they are assessed on like-for-like terms.
The fresh study demonstrates that the collision risk is eight times greater for e-bikes compared to e-scooters, when calculated based on journey distance using rental vehicles in urban environments. The Swedish research team describe their "surprise" findings as suggesting that earlier studies have "grossly underestimated" the safety of e-scooters relative to e-bicycles.
