Pole vaulter Kurtis Marschall has claimed Australia's first medal of the world athletics championships and got just as much joy from watching another world record from super Swede Mondo Duplantis.

Duplantis already had a third successive world title in his keeping after powering over at 6.15m.

Ever the showman, he then had the bar raised to 6.30m and cleared it at the third and final attempt to the delight of a capacity crowd at the National Stadium.

No-one looked happier than his close friend Marschall, who equalled his personal best of 5.95m to pocket the bronze.
