A teacher at Corvette Junior Public School in Toronto has been suspended pending an investigation. This follows an incident where the teacher showed a violent video related to the assassination of U.S. conservative activist Charlie Kirk to a group of Grade 5 and 6 students.
Principal Jennifer Koptie addressed the situation in a letter sent to parents on Friday, describing the incident as "extremely troubling and unacceptable." She explained that the video was shown to French Immersion students in response to their questions about a recent tragic event in the United States.
Koptie noted that the footage was shown once by a staff member who was supervising the class but was not the homeroom teacher. The Toronto District School Board confirmed that the video depicted Kirk's shooting death at Utah Valley University on September 10. An investigation is underway to clarify the details surrounding the incident.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows Kirk being shot in the neck, with blood visible as he collapses. Koptie stated that the teacher will not return to the school while the investigation is ongoing. She emphasized that the school’s "top priority is supporting students," and social workers were made available to assist on Friday.
The letter was sent out on the same day that authorities in the U.S. arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as a suspect in Kirk’s murder. Robinson is expected to face formal charges on Tuesday.
