What do you get when you give one of the most popular anime series in the world the big screen treatment? A record setting box office. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has begun its theatrical run in the U.S. by more than doubling the previous opening weekend record for an anime movie.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle took home a whopping $70 million in its first weekend in U.S. theaters. That earned it the #1 box office spot. But that’s not even close to its most impressive feat. As Variety notes , it easily demolished the old anime film opening weekend record of $31 million. Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back held that title since 1999. As of this writing Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has also taken in more than $350 million worldwide .
