SUMNER, Wash. — A man is in the hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle collided with an Amtrak train in Sumner on Monday.
The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. where the tracks intersect with Maple Street in Sumner, officials said. The driver, who police said is a man in his 20's, was transported in "serious condition."
Witnesses told police at the scene that the man tried to get over the tracks before the train passed through, after the railroad crossing arm had already come down.
"We were sitting out on the porch and we heard a big 'kaboom', like a really loud noise," said Cortney Brooks, who lives near the railroad crossing and went to help assist.
She said around 20 good Samaritans ran to the scene to help, checking to see if others were in the car and aiding the man.
