B.C. Premier David Eby has astounded some by joining Quebec Premier Francois Legault and federal Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre in saying there are too many guest workers and international students in Canada.

The politicians are responding to Ottawa’s approval of historic surges in temporary residents, which began in 2015 and swelled higher in 2023 at the direction of then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Late last year, however, when there were a record three million temporary residents in the country, Trudeau conceded: “We could have acted quicker and turned off the taps faster.”

Given the former PM’s admission, it’s peculiar some are surprised that Eby wants to bring premiers together for “a serious and adult conversation” about migration levels.
