LSU football coach Brian Kelly watches his team's game against Louisiana Tech during the second half at Tiger Stadium.

Brian Kelly issued a public apology on Monday, Sept. 15, for his outburst in his postgame news conference on Sept. 13 following LSU football's win over Florida.

Kelly told reporters that he texted reporter Michael Cauble of WBRZ ― a local television news outlet ― an apology.

"I've texted (Cauble) and offered my apologies to him for the way I handled the questioning," Kelly said told reporters. "I think it's important to understand that my standards relative to the media on a day-to-day basis need to be higher. I take responsibility for that, and I've got to be better in the future.

"Also, understanding the way I'm thinking after a game, the emotions of the game right after it, I haven't watched any film, it's difficult to make those assessments of specifics. And I'm going to defend my team, my players first and foremost. Having said that, I publicly apologize to Mike. He's an outstanding reporter, he works really hard and we'll do better moving forward."

Kelly fielded the first question of the news conference from Cauble, who asked the LSU coach about the inconsistencies in the run game and third down for the Tigers against Florida, despite the 20-10 win.

Kelly cut Cauble off mid-question.

"Just stop. We won the game, 20-10. Try another question," Kelly said. "What do you want me to tell you? I just laid it out for you. We played the game to win the game."

LSU's offense scored just one offensive touchdown, which came in the first half. The Tigers were outgained 366-316 by the Gators, were 4 for 14 on third downs and ran 24 fewer plays than the Gators.

"It's one game. Last game, we were great on third down. You're micro — you're looking at this from the wrong perspective," Kelly said. "LSU won the football game. I don't know what you want from me. What do you want? You want us to win 70 to nothing against Florida to keep you happy?"

LSU returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Southeast Louisiana.
