Lance Franklin believes it would be wise for Essendon to cut ties with captain Zach Merrett, admitting he would be "pissed off" if he was a player at the club.

Merrett's future at the Bombers was turned upside down last week after it was first revealed by Nine's chief AFL reporter Tom Morris that the skipper had held a meeting with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell regarding a potential move.

Brad Scott quickly shut down any potential of Merrett being traded to the Hawks, but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from going into overdrive, with claims that the 29-year-old could skip his current club's best and fairest award ceremony where he is expected to win a sixth club medal.
