CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) -- A student crossing the street near Charleston High School was hit by a car on Monday and flown to the hospital with "severe" injuries.

The Charleston Police Department said the accident happened just before noon. A student was crossing 18th Street, north of Lincoln Avenue, when a car hit them. The student was life flighted to a hospital with "severe" injuries.

The police department said the car remained on the scene and no citations or arrests have been made as of Monday evening. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Charleston fire, the Life Flight team and the Eastern Police Department also responded to the scene.
