CHICAGO (WLS) -- A driver who tried to flee the scene of a serious crash on the South Side is among two people critically injured on Monday, Chicago police said.

Police said the crash happened in the Englewood neighborhood's 6300-block of South Morgan Street just before 5 a.m.

Officers saw a black Mazda SUV speeding and drifting into other lanes. When police tried to investigate, the SUV hit a green Pontiac sedan in the intersection.

Officers arrested the SUV's driver, who tried to flee the scene.

Both drivers were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

CPD's Major Accidents Unit is investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information.
