SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The Sarasota Police Department presented its annual report for the School Zone Safety Program, saying people are getting the message to slow down.
Police told the City Commission Monday that since the cameras went into operation, the number of citations in school zones are down 60% citywide.
“They’re driving like Miss Daisy in these school zones and that’s great,” Chief Rex Troche said.
The program began during the 2024-2025 school year, and was encouraged after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 657 on May 31, 2023.
This bill encourages the enforcement of school zone speed limits with equipment like cameras by the Sarasota County schools. This equipment is used to enforce speeding violations during the school day.
