BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Kern County is the home to seas of oil rigs, but there might be more coming on the horizon.

Senate Bill 237 would allow the creation of up to 2,000 oil rigs in the county each year. This could mean some long-awaited jobs for workers in the oil industry.

"Over the last couple of years here in Kern County, there has been a lot of uncertainty when it comes to permitting," said State Senator Melissa Hurtado. "There has been a very small amount of permits that have been handed out by the state of California. Now there is certainty."

The bill was introduced by Senator Hurtado along with four other members of the California Senate. Senators stayed long into the weekend negotiating the terms of the bill.
