HILLSBORO, Mo. (First Alert 4) -Monday marked a very special day in the Hillsboro R-3 School District, as it celebrated one of its youngest students and brought awareness to her rare genetic disorder.
Summer Beranek, 4, is a student at the district’s Early Childhood Center and was diagnosed with Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome when she was 10 days old, the earliest its ever been diagnosed in a child.
“When we were at Children’s Hospital in the days after she was born, there were no doctors that had heard of WSS,” said Summer’s mom, Amanda Beranek. “So we knew we needed to get her into different kinds of therapies and quickly.”
Summer is just one of three children worldwide with WSS who was also born with micrognathia, also known as a recessed jaw and cleft palate.
