MAYESVILLE, S.C. — Mayesville’s old Town Hall has been sitting empty for years without a roof, right next to the town’s fire station.

Now, plans are moving forward to tear it down, but first asbestos needs to be removed.

Mayor Christopher Brown said testing in September confirmed asbestos in the drywall and flashing on the front of the building.

Because of the damage, including the missing roof, the Department of Environmental Services will need to remove it before renovation's can begin.

“It takes about 10 days to get an asbestos permit and another 10 days for demolition,” Brown said. “Once permits are approved, removal could be done within a week.”
