TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. (WVUE) - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found oil, zinc and barium among other substances in the Tangipahoa River after the Smitty’s Supply explosion.

A spokesperson for the EPA told FOX 8 that the administration gathered water samples from near Kentwood and Independence on Aug. 29, one week after the explosion .

The Kentwood sample was upstream from the explosion, while the Independence was downstream.

It released the data on its explosion website .

The EPA released a statement reading in part:

“Downstream samples with detected levels of zinc were just above Louisiana’s water quality criteria for aquatic life, and there was an elevated presence of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as compared to the upstream sample. The removal of visible contam
