University City has a proposal to clear-cut a very old 11-acre forest and replace it with 106 housing units, 222 parking spaces and pickleball courts. The forest contains 100-year-old trees and owls. Losing it would impact the city's severe flooding problem and destroy this intricate ecosystem. University City is already among the most paved cities in Missouri.
This forest is a jewel. Those trees and owls and other wildlife are providing a sustainable ecosystem that reduces flood risk and impact. Unlike the trees in the Wizard of Oz, these trees have no faces to be confronted when approached by those noisy saws. Owls live other places in University City but it is on our land, subject to our whims. This forest is theirs.
