Cleveland State University’s board of trustees voted on Aug. 28 to give the go-ahead for negotiations to start between the university, the United Soccer League and USL Cleveland on the sports league’s proposal to repurpose the site of the Wolstein Center into an open-air soccer stadium and vibrant mixed-use district.

The board had already supported initiating a request for qualifications process earlier this year to look into the community’s opinion about possibly redeveloping the site, and CSU issued a request for proposals in May 2025. After looking over a slew of proposals, the review committee decided unanimously to forward the USL proposal to the board of trustees, and after its approval the two sides will now work on what comes next.
