HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced she will not seek reelection in 2026, her office confirmed to KHOU 11 Monday night.
Hidalgo, who took office in 2019 after a surprise victory over longtime Republican Ed Emmett, has become one of the most recognizable figures in Texas local government.
Her second term has been marked by heated budget fights with fellow Democrats, a formal censure following a chaotic Commissioners Court meeting, and public clashes with Houston Mayor John Whitmire. She also led Harris County through the COVID-19 pandemic and several major weather events, including Hurricane Beryl and the derecho.
