Bridgeton police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident from Sept. 13.

Authorities responded to the area of East Broad Street and James D. Edwards Sr. Way at approximately 9:25 p.m. Sept. 13 following a report of a person lying on the roadway's shoulder, according to a press release from police.

The individual was identified as 58-year-old Pedro Chavaz of Bridgeton.

Chavaz was pronounced dead at the scene. He'd been found with "serious head and facial injuries," the release said.

Authorities are investigating the incident, believing that an unknown vehicle traveling westbound struck the pedestrian who was walking eastbound along the shoulder of East Broad Street.

Police believe the vehicle would have been damaged on the front passenger side and windshield.
