A sunken “ghost ship” eluded shipwreck hunters for years. Finally, after more than a century, side-scan sonar revealed the location of the missing F.J. King in Lake Michigan.

The Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association discovered the wreckage on June 28 off Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, according to a news release published by Shipwreck World . A group of 20 citizen scientists were scanning a 2-square-mile grid. The 140-foot-long wreck slid across the screen about two hours into the search, on just the second pass.

“A few of us had to pinch each other,” said Brendon Baillod, who led the effort. “After all the previous searches, we couldn’t believe we had actually found it, and so quickly.”
