Former Iowa wrestling star Real Woods secured a bronze medal in his Senior World Championships debut after being unseeded at 65 kilograms entering the tournament.
The four-time NCAA All-American, who now wrestles for the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club (University of Michigan), was 4-1 in Zagreb, Croatia. His only loss came to Iran's Rahman Amouzadkhalili by a 12-1 technical fall, and Amouzadkhalili went on to win the championship.
Aside from losing to the eventual champion, Woods was stellar. He opened with a 14-2 technical fall victory over Moldova's Maxim Sacultan (2024 Olympian). Following the loss to Amouzadkhalili, he was pulled back into the repechage and never looked back, winning in a 10-0 technical fall over Ikromzhon Khadzhimurodov of Kyrgyzstan and a 7-5 decision over India's Sujee
