Ricardo Pepi and PSV are off to a nightmare start in their Champions League campaign.

The striker conceded a penalty just eight minutes into his side's Champions League opener against Union Saint-Gilloise on Tuesday, then was partially responsible for the Belgian side's second.

Saint-Gilloise would go on to score another after Pepi had exited, securing a shock 3-1 away win in Eindhoven.

Pepi was coming off a brace in league play over the weekend, but the 22-year-old showed early that he's not quite as proficient on the opposite end of the pitch.

The American forward was a bit too casual in his own box, chesting down a clearance before attempting to volley the ball away to safety. But Pepi didn't notice Christian Burgess charging in, and his follow-through went straight into the Saint-Gilloise defender.

The referee pointed to the spot, with Canada international Promise David converting to give his team an early lead at Philips Stadium.

It was the first Champions League goal for David and for Belgian champion Saint-Gilloise, which has qualified for the league phase of the competition for the first time.

It would get even worse for Pepi five minutes before halftime. The striker was guilty of losing the ball near midfield, and Anouar Ait El Hadj proceeded to drive straight into the heart of PSV's defense before finishing low to make it 2-0.

Kevin Mac Allister added a third for Saint-Gilloise in the 81st minute, putting the game away before Ruben van Bommel pulled one back for PSV in the 90th minute.

Sergiño Dest started and played the full match for PSV, but was unable to prevent the Dutch champion from slumping to a damaging defeat.

The opening-match loss sees PSV behind the eight ball early, with the team's schedule set to increase in difficulty.

PSV's next match will come on Oct. 1 against Bayer Leverkusen before it faces Serie A champion Napoli. Matches against Liverpool, Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich are also on the docket.
